Where to stay in Alfama

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter. It largely survived the 1755 earthquake, so it keeps a maze of steep lanes below São Jorge Castle, the home of fado music.

Who it suits

Romantics and travellers who want atmosphere, viewpoints (miradouros) and fado houses.

Getting around

Tram 28 passes through, and Santa Apolónia station (blue line and trains) is at the bottom of the hill. Expect lots of steps.

Trade-offs

It is hilly and taxis can't reach many lanes, which is hard with luggage. Festivals in June, especially Santo António, are very loud.

FAQ

Is Alfama noisy?

Usually quiet at night, except during the June festivals (Festas de Lisboa).

Is Alfama good for older travellers?

The steep cobbled lanes can be tiring, so consider Baixa if mobility is a concern.
